When Irving and Jenny Holt moved to Applewood Estates, CentraState’s independent living and LifeCare retirement community, last February from Lake Worth, FL, it was a homecoming of sorts. The couple had lived for many years in Springfield, NJ, where they raised two children and Irving owned barbershops in Springfield and Newark until retiring in 1980. Three years later, they moved to a quiet Florida community where Jenny, an artist, could sculpt and paint.

Oscar Trager and his wife Muriel were married for 57 years before she passed away in 2002. After years of doing everything together from visiting local parks and museums to spending time with their daughters— Oscar found himself lonely and out-ofsorts without her.

When Freehold native Earl Dix, now 82, retired in 1990, he set some goals for himself, one of which was to learn something new. The former president of Air Cruisers Co. in Wall found that “something new” at the Monmouth County Fair. There Earl met a wood carver and became one of his students for the next three years, learning the art of woodcarving.

Marjorie Stine says being able to continue her lifelong pursuit of music was an unexpected benefit of moving to Applewood Estates.

Hope Mann was born in Rahway, NJ, and married Hillard Mann, a physician, in 1945. Together, they raised a family of four girls before retiring to Florida.

 

SeniorsFirst is a complimentary community outreach and education program for those age 60 and older in the surrounding areas of Freehold, Manalapan, Marlboro, Monroe, and Jackson. SeniorsFirst, which is sponsored by Applewood Estates, offers social events, prevention programs, counseling, support groups, screening services, special luncheons, and health fairs.

 

Rose Crociata, 78, a retired teacher and Applewood Estates resident, decided what her retired life would be like years ago while visiting a fellow teacher at Applewood Estates. Rose was so impressed with the facility that she and her sister, who shared a home together in Freehold, planned to move to Applewood Estates someday.

 

While living in Manalapan, Bryant Gould, 87, Applewood Estates resident and playwright, and Katie, 83, his wife of nearly 60 years, pursued careers while raising their daughter. Katie was the graduate secretary for the Chemistry Department at Princeton University for 20 years while Bryant was an architect with a New York firm that specialized in design for hospitals, laboratories, and other institutions.

 

Parlez-vous Français? Some residents at Applewood Estates speak French, and they can practice their language skills every month at the French speaking table in the dining room.
