How large is Applewood?
|
|
Applewood has 290 independent living apartment homes and 20 cottages, 40 assisted living apartments and 60 health care residences in addition to the multi-faceted 60,000 sq. ft Promenade and Commons.

Will I have to walk outside to reach the Promenade and Commons?
|
|
The Commons with the Promenade is directly attached to the apartment home buildings. For those in the cottages, it’s an easy walk using entrances around the building.
|

|
How would you characterize the architecture?
|
|
Applewood is a classic Williamsburg colonial red brick with white trim community with a contemporary flair. The apartment homes are in 3 story buildings attached to the transitional Promenade and Commons. Each apartment has its’ own balcony or patio. The cottages are semi-detached with one-car garages and neighbor-friendly front porches.

Where will I park and is there room to bring 2 cars?
|
|
Applewood has assigned parking spaces outside for one or two cars at no additional charge. There are also 83 individual garages available at an additional expense. All the cottages feature one car attached garages. Visitor parking is available in front of the main entrance.

|
How many elevators?
|
|
There are a total of 5 elevators in the complex. Two for each of the East and West Wings and one for the new South Wing.
|
|
|
Are the residences handicap accessible or equipped with assistance features?
|
|
There are a number of apartments that are already handicap accessible and all are ADA adaptable with doorways wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, front controls on the range, 17" high bathroom commodes, walls blocked to support grab bars if needed, and many with walk-in showers.

What storage facilities are available?
|
|
In addition to the spacious apartment closets, there are large storage closets off each apartment balcony or patio which can be used to store luggage or decorations. Plus, there is a temperature controlled storage closet at the end of each residence hall.

|
What security features are available at Applewood? Are there security cameras?
|
|
There are pull cords in each bedroom and bathroom that connect directly to health care and security. Remote buttons are available at additional expense. There is also a flipper system on each door monitored by security that indicates whether a person has been out of their apartment each day. Security cameras are positioned at key access points to the building and in specific Commons locations such as the swimming pool. The cameras are double monitored by Applewood and the CentraState Medical Center Security. Access to individual garages is by remote garage door openers.

What special design features have been included to make Applewood more efficient and comfortable?
|
|
The apartments at Applewood have individual heat and air-conditioning systems so the resident can control the temperature in their apartment and the circulation is only in their apartment. Many apartments have heat lamps in the baths as well.

What are the dimensions of the swimming pool and the depth; is it for exercise or for lap swimming?
|
|
The swimming pool approximately 20 feet wide by 75 feet long and 3 ˝ - 4 feet deep. It is used for lap swimming, individual exercise regimens, and exercise classes held at scheduled times during the week.

|
What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community?
|
|
A "CCRC" is a retirement community with multiple levels of care. Residents must be able to live independently with no health care services in order to move to Applewood. Should they reach a point where they can no longer live independently, they have the peace of mind to know that they are guaranteed access to the assisted living and/or skilled care available in other areas of the building.

|
|
What is a lifecare community?
|
|
Residents at Applewood have a choice between a "Lifecare" agreement and a "Personal Choice" agreement. With a lifecare arrangement, Applewood residents who can no longer live independently can move to the assisted living or skilled nursing accommodations and receive those services at no additional cost except an additional 2 meals a day beyond what they were paying in their independent residence. With a "personal choice" arrangement, the monthly fee is lower during independent occupancy but moves to market rates for either assisted living or skilled nursing if needed.

What is an Entrance Fee?
|
|
It is a one time fee paid when you occupy your residence at Applewood. It allows Applewood to provide the finest features in our spacious apartments and cottage homes and the extensive amenities in our Promenade and Commons for our residents. There are a number of refundable Entrance Fee options which offer refunds to the resident or their estate when they leave Applewood. Your Lifestyle Counselor will be glad to explain the various options for you.

What is included in the Monthly Service Fee? Many things:
|
- Electricity, sewer, water, heating and cooling, basic cable, internet and trash removal are included in the MSF.
- Hazard and Liability Insurance on the building (we strongly suggest obtaining "renter’s insurance to cover the cost of your belongings).
- Fitness Director will conduct fitness classes in the indoor pool and aerobics studios and will be available to consult on the use of the fitness equipment in the exercise room. One on one fitness coaching with a personal trainer will be available at an additional expense.
- A Discretionary Dining Allowance is included in the Monthly Service Fee and may be used in the bistro, dining room and country store for yourself or your guests.
- Emergency Response System.
- Scheduled local transportation to medical appointments and shopping venues.
- Lifestyle Director will supply a complete monthly calendar of educational, recreational, social, and entertainment events and activities.
- Routine maintenance of your apartment and the common areas.
- Maintenance of all appliances that are provided by Applewood.
- In addition, the fees include all outdoor maintenance, lawn care and snow removal.
- Access to all community spaces such as the library, performing arts center, card and game rooms, art studio, woodshop, meeting and educational spaces, etc.

What is included in the dining program?
|
- Bistro Café: located in the center of the community at the end of the Promenade is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages and snacks from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday.
- The Country Market has basic staples, bread, eggs, milk, dry goods, soup, pasta, crackers, snacks, cookies, candy and bottled beverages,. etc. for purchase either with your dining card or cash.
- Dinner is served in the Dining Room Monday through Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 and Sunday from 11:30 – 1:30.
- Take Out Meals: there is a convenient area where you may pick up meals that you order ahead of time by phone.
- Room Service: tray service to your residence will be provided on a limited basis during periods of recuperation as requested by resident services or will be available for an extra charge.
- Private Dining and Catering: dining services will provide catering for private events in the private dining room or in other pre-arranged locations.

What happens to my apartment or cottage when I am away?
|
|
One of the things people like about living at a community like Applewood is the easy "lock and go" opportunity and peace of mind knowing that Applewood will periodically check to be sure your apartment home or cottage is secure and all systems are working properly during long absences. You must notify the front desk when you are planning to be away.

What is the relationship between Applewood Estates and CentraState Health Systems?
|
|
Applewood Estates is a separate not-for-profit corporation in affiliation with CentraState Health Systems.
|
|
|
Are religious services held on the premises?
|
|
Although most people prefer to continue at their own place of worship, Applewood has an interdenominational service every Wednesday, Rosary and Temple every Friday, Torah Study every Saturday and buses to local Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Baptist churches on Sundays.

Is there an age restriction?
|
|
Applewood is for people age 62 and better or for couples when one is at least 62 years of age.
|
|
|
What is the dress code in the dining rooms?
|
|
By request, dress code in the dining room and marketplace is casual at all times. Residents may dress up for special occasions at their discretion. T-shirts, sweatpants, shorts, swimsuits and other abbreviated attire is not welcome in the table service areas of any of the dining venues with the exception of the terrace when it is open during the season.

Are pets allowed?
|
|
Pets are like family members and we would not ask you to leave your pet to come to Applewood. However, only dogs, cats, fish and birds are allowed at Applewood and must be approved by the Executive Director. Dogs and cats are allowed only on the first floor of the East and West Wings and on all three floors of the South Wing. No pets are allowed in the dining areas under any circumstances. Pets on a leash may pass through the common areas in route to your residence.

How are trash disposal and recycling handled?
|
|
Apartment residents may take their trash to the trash room on every corridor of the apartment buildings. Each room has a trash shoot for regular garbage and a variety of recycle containers. Cottage residents are asked to place their trash and recycle containers in front of their garage on a scheduled basis.
|

|
What health services will be available at Applewood?
|
|
Applewood is designed for independent living and therefore there are no daily health care services provided in individual residences. However, there is a clinic on the premises where residents may choose to consult with the physicians on duty during scheduled hours. As a convenience to residents, arrangements may be made for various practitioners (such as a podiatrist) to visit on a pre-scheduled basis at an additional fee. Of course, transportation is provided on a pre-reserved basis to medical appointments within the area. Should someone no longer be able to live independently, they can move to assisted living or skilled nursing located in the complex.

Why is Applewood’s Health Care benefit important if I have Long Term Care Insurance?
|
|
Applewood offers both Lifecare Agreements for those without LTC and Personal Choice Agreements for those with Long Term Care insurance. Since each LTC plan is different, we suggest consulting your advisor to see which program is best for you.

Is there a resident council? How is it elected?
|
|
Yes, there is a resident council elected by the residents with representation from throughout the community.
